Vaccaries!

A Vaccary Wall at Wycoller

Is there no end to the fascination of Wycoller?

Large estates for feeding and breeding cattle were known as vaccaries and this image shows you some of the stones in a vaccary wall near Wycoller.

The word comes from a Middle English term 'vaccarie' which in turn is derived from the Latin word for a cow - 'vacca'.

These stones would have been familiar to the Brontë children on their long walks from the Parsonage in Haworth and can be seen quite easily if you follow either the Brontë Trail or the Pendle Trail from Wycoller.
