Seeing Things

Knots or Angels?

When you look at carpets, walls, tree trunks, floorboards etc., do you see the figures there? In this picture, for example, if you look for a while at the two 'round' knots, those knots become heads and the smudges next to them look like torsos. Fancifully, since my house was once a small chapel, I could imagine these as the figures of angels. Perhaps alarmingly for the angels, when I look at the plasterwork in my bedroom, I can see a pharaoh with a baboon sitting in front of him!

I've long had the idea of writing a story in which a young boy or girl starts to notice figures around the house, only to awake one night to discover that they have been 'released' and are making their way across the duvet! Alarming? Perhaps … but it might all end happily if the child befriends the creatures and discovers that something s/he has done has secured their release. From whom or what I have yet to decide but it's comforting having a story up one's sleeve!
