Mercator

Mercator - the Shaping Magician

Mercator is the first of the Magicians to appear in The Magic Makers. I chose the name for two reasons: firstly because it is the name of the great Flemish cartographer and secondly because of its sound. The dramatic pulse of the second syllable suggests his might and energy; the crisp consonants 'c' and 't' convey a sense of his precision.

Mercator plunged into the realms of thought.

His fine imagination swiftly caught

The shapes, the forms, the contours of his mind.

The principal conceit is that Mercator employs the 'shapes' of his emotions, feelings and moods as he gives form to the Earth's seas and continents.

This is one of Nicola's most thrilling images, which is why I chose it to go on my business card!
