Magic in Schools

Nicola's Tiger

One school in Bradford decided to add to my 'Reading and Writing Poetry' workshop, by incorporating linked sessions on art and drama into the day. Nicola's Tiger was a particular favourite in the art groups. It's a favourite of mine, too, and although I've seen it dozens of times it still gives me a little frisson when I turn the page to find it leaping out at me:

In molten bronze, the tiger’s fluid power

Roared out its terror – heard the jungle cower:

He saw the sharp-edged blood-streaks of macaws;

He heard the panther crouch on velvet paws.

This is one of the pictures produced by a Year 6 student on that day. I love its intensity and use of colour.
