Boyle's Law

Robert Boyle

The Long Gallery at Gawthorpe Hall displays a number of portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. Amongst them is a painting of Robert Boyle (1627-1691), considered by many to be the first modern chemist.

Boyle's Law describes how the pressure of a gas increases as the volume of the container decreases and I have often reflected that this would provide an excellent metaphor for my current attitude to life. As each day passes and my remaining time reduces, I feel an increasing pressure to make the most of whatever talents and opportunities I have.

Oh, that's not a morbid perspective; it's something which genuinely energises me.
