Assault from Battery

Illiciumbatterea

The hazards to marine life from waste plastics are becoming well-publicised; in Metamorfishes, we highlight a wide range of pollutants, including discarded batteries. Here, Nicola has taken the female Anglerfish as her starting point. The fish does indeed have an illicium, or illuminated 'fishing pole', with which to attract prey or a mate - hence an appropriate creature to advertise the polluting impact of batteries.

My contribution:

This femme fatale ignites the dark

To lunch on squid and minor shark;

The afterglow then helps her choose

A mate to cure the midnight blues.

She has no need of cast-off batteries

To fire an angler fish’s flatteries.

Each case corrodes, then toxins leach,

Polluting river, sea and beach.
